With just 7 days to go until the transfer window slams shut, it remains to be seen if Italian international Wilfried Gnonto has a future at the Elland Road.
The 19 year old handed the club a transfer request prior to the West Brom fixture, however the saga took another turn this week when it was revealed that he had returned to first team training under whites boss Daniel Farke.
There is a growing consensus amongst the Leeds faithful that Gnonto is being badly advised by his agent, which would account for the players refusal to be included in the two most recent EFL Championship squads and the subsequent transfer request. This by no means absolves Gnonto from criticism, but at least if true, may offer the young winger a route back into the fold.
The actions of the young Italian has left Leeds United fans feeling rightly aggrieved, with many suggesting a change of agent and a heartfelt apology is needed before the former fans favourite takes to the field again.
The player has split opinion amongst supporters, with many believing he should be left to stew with the clubs U-21’s. As Gnonto does not have a release clause in his contract, the club are not under an obligation to let him go. An alternative view coming from the stands suggests the club should cash in, as bridges have now been burned and the players commitment to club has been seriously questioned.
Realistically however, there is a chance Gnonto will remain at the club, until January at least. As unpalatable as this may sound to many fans, Gnonto is a player with talent and could be the difference in tight games, in a league with many tight games. However, in order to restore the relationship with a fans, you would think a heartfelt apology will be necessary. After that it will all come down to his performances on this pitch. It is still in his hands to turn this around and stranger things have happened in LS11.
