Leeds United are planning to make big changes to Elland Road, with hopes to increase the stadium’s capacity to 53,000 seats. The 49ers Enterprises, who now own the club, are serious about the expansion and want to improve the matchday experience for fans.
The project is expected to happen in different phases, focusing mainly on upgrading the West Stand, as well as work on the South and North Stands. But, with such a big job ahead, it won’t be completed overnight.
A Step-by-Step Expansion
Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has made it clear that this won’t be a quick job. He confirmed that the work will be done in different phases to make sure the stadium remains operational during construction.

“There will probably be a couple of phases that ultimately take us to 53,000,” Marathe said. He added that the club wants to expand the stadium without losing too many seats while the work is being done. This means that while it may take longer, the plan is to keep as many fans inside Elland Road as possible during match days.
One of the biggest concerns is keeping the unique Elland Road atmosphere. Marathe described the stadium as a “cauldron of noise” that opposition teams fear. Any major building work that blocks off sections of the stadium could take away from this intense environment, so the club wants to be careful with how they manage construction.
How Long Will It Take?
There’s no exact timeline for the project yet, but looking at similar stadium expansions in England, it could take anywhere from two to four years.
Liverpool expanded their Anfield Road Stand, adding 7,000 seats, and the work took around two and a half years. Manchester City’s South Stand expansion was completed much faster, taking just over a year. However, their ongoing North Stand expansion is set to take more than two years.
Leeds’ expansion is bigger than both of those, with the first phase alone set to increase capacity to 47,000 before reaching the full 53,000. That’s an extra 15,000 seats in total, making it a massive job.
Wrexham, another club currently expanding their stadium, is rebuilding an entire stand, which will take about three years. However, since Leeds are working on an existing structure while keeping the stadium open, it could take even longer.
The 49ers’ Experience in Stadium Development
Leeds fans can take confidence in the fact that the 49ers Enterprises have experience in stadium construction. In 2014, they built Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, a 70,000-seater venue, in just two years. However, that was a completely new stadium, while Elland Road is an existing one that needs careful work.
Because of this, predicting an exact completion date is tough. However, if everything is done within three years, it would be seen as a great achievement.
For now, Leeds United fans will have to wait for further updates, but the club is moving forward with a project that could take Elland Road to the next level.
