Leeds United have begun discussions with Nottingham Forest to sign centre-back Andrew Omobamidele in the January transfer window.
According to The Sun, the deal could involve an initial loan with a guaranteed buy clause, with Forest seeking £10 million for the 22-year-old defender.
Sheffield United are also in the race to sign the Irishman but favor a straightforward loan, while Leeds view Omobamidele as a long-term asset.
Daniel Farke’s Connection with Omobamidele
Leeds manager Daniel Farke is no stranger to Omobamidele’s talent. During their time at Norwich City, Farke handed the defender his Premier League debut in a match against Arsenal in September 2021, describing his performance as “outstanding.”
Farke is reportedly keen to reunite with the player to strengthen Leeds’ defensive ranks.
Currently, Leeds have senior centre-backs Pascal Struijk, Joe Rodon, and Max Wober, with Ethan Ampadu available as a backup option.
However, with Max Wober potentially leaving Elland Road this January, Leeds are looking to add depth and competition in defense.
Defensive Concerns at Leeds
Leeds’ recent defensive struggles, including conceding three goals in a 3-3 draw against Hull City on 4 December, highlight the need for reinforcements.
The team is in the thick of the Championship promotion race, and shoring up their backline could be crucial for maintaining their top-flight aspirations.
Omobamidele’s limited opportunities at Nottingham Forest, where his sole appearance this season was in an EFL Cup loss to Newcastle, make a move to Elland Road an attractive prospect.
Under Farke’s guidance, the Ireland international could revive his career and regain his best form.
