With the 23/24 EFL Championship season kicking off in less than two weeks, Leeds United are set to lose another prominent player for the forthcoming season.
24 year old Austrian centre half Max Wöber looks close to leaving the club on loan to German outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach. Wöber is the sixth player set to leave the club on loan this summer, and is yet another player who is taking advantage of the botched contract conditions put in place by the Radrizzani adminisration. Wöber looked an assured presence on the field for Leeds last year, making 16 appearances after signing for the club in January 2023. He made his debut in the FA cup fourth round win against Acccrington Stanley.
There was an expectation Wöber would remain at the club, partly due to him having only arrived in January and still being just 24, however his exit on loan now appears imminent. He is a player you feel would have been hugely effective in the Championship this season and Leeds will be a weaker side without him. Mönchengladbach, who incidentally were managed by Leeds boss Daniel Farke last season, finished 10th in the Bundesliga and will consider the capture of Wöber on loan to be an astute piece of business.
He is a player who may well be welcomed back to Elland Road in the future as he was a fan favourite and will not be remembered amongst underperforming teammates. Leeds still have Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk, Leo Hjelde, Charlie Cresswell and new signing Ethan Ampadu now vying for positions in central defence. It remains to be seen if the club will look to add some further quality in that area
