One club at the centre of such a dispute is Leeds United, who infuriated Sheffield United by bidding well below market value for Gustavo Hamer.
A bid that was largely viewed as derisory, especially given Leeds’ recent financial gains from player sales, has drawn sharp criticism from Chris Wilder, the Blades’ boss.
The Controversial Offer
Wilder expressed his annoyance over Leeds United for their £13 million offer for Hamer on Deadline Day.
This bid came shortly after Leeds sold two of their key players, Archie Gray to Tottenham and Georginio Rutter to Brighton, both fetching £40 million each.
Even though they had received a huge windfall, Leeds’ offer for Hamer, a player of the year for Sheffield United last season, Wilder deemed an offer for Hamer to be “ridiculously low” too.
Wilder was frank: “They sold two players for £40m each and then ridiculously low-balled us on our best player.”
His anger was clear, proving he has the best interests of Sheffield United at heart and cares not a jot for how it’s perceived, especially by Leeds or their fanbase.
Leeds United’s Missed Opportunity
The situation becomes even more puzzling when considering reports that Hamer had a relegation release clause in his contract, which could have made him available for the same price Leeds offered.
But that contract came with a release clause, which by the time Leeds made their bid had long since expired.
Even more bafflingly still, Hamer had apparently agreed personal terms with Leeds before this move broke down, only serving to compound the mystery of how he was not signed.
It left many fans and pundits scratching their heads, with some asking why Leeds didn’t move to get the deal over the line.
A Lesson for the Future?
Their treatment of it at least, has not gone down well with Sheffield United or one suspects their own fans back home in Leeds.
The straightforward, strategic purchase of a quality international midfielder has become the lost chance that suggests so much about how United are being run.
That must serve as a lesson for Leeds as the dust settles. The market never sleeps and the best way to avoid falling into trouble, with everyone involved watching your every move, is by hitting that sweet spot between dreaming big but also remaining a little grounded.
Elsewhere, Leeds United did manage to add one more new face on deadline day despite the Hamer collapse as they prepare for the top-flight into the new season with a slightly bolstered squad.
