Scott Parker delivered his verdict on the penalty-sized elephant in the room after Burnley ground out an ugly 1-0 win at Elland Road to punish Leeds yet again.
Leeds winger Manor Solomon drew comparisons by going to ground in the first half under a tackle from Burnley’s Joe Worrall.
Some of the players for Leeds, including Solomon, felt it should have been a penalty but referee James Bell waved play on.
Parker’s Reaction
Parker was asked after the match if he thought it was a penalty. He admitted he hadn’t reviewed the incident but didn’t think it was a foul in real-time.
He explained: “I’ve not seen it again, but at the moment it looked like he got a toe on the ball. It wouldn’t be fair for me to comment without watching it back.”
This challenge raised a lot of debate, with some feeling Worrall’s tackle from behind warranted a penalty, especially given the manner in which he approached the ball.
Leeds fans were left frustrated by the decision as it could have changed the game.
Tony Dorigo’s Verdict
Former Leeds United defender Tony Dorigo, who was commentating on LUTV, strongly disagreed with the referee’s decision.
He believed it was a clear foul on Solomon and should have resulted in a penalty.
Dorigo explained: “You can’t tackle from behind like that. Solomon was ahead of Worrall, and to me, it looked like a penalty all day long.”
Leeds struggled to break down Burnley despite dominating possession and creating chances through Mateo Joseph and Wilfried Gnonto.
The penalty could have changed the game, especially given that Leeds was pushing hard to equalize before halftime.
Leeds Missed Opportunities
Leeds had opportunities to score, including an early chance for Mateo Joseph, who went through on goal but missed, and Willy Gnonto, who had several chances but couldn’t convert.
Despite this, it was Burnley’s Luca Koleosho who scored the only goal of the game, punishing Leeds after a slip from Manor Solomon.
In the end, Parker’s Burnley held on to win, and Leeds were left ruing missed chances and a contentious penalty decision.
The Whites suffered their first Championship loss of the season and will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
