The football world is mourning the loss of Sol Bamba, who tragically passed away at the age of 39.
The ex-defender was a popular figure in English football, spending an illustrious career with clubs like Leicester City, Leeds United, Cardiff City, and Middlesbrough.
A Respected Career
Born in Paris, started his football career at the youth academy of Paris Saint-Germain’s and moved to Scotland where he played for Dunfermline before joining Hibernian.
His career in England started booming after he moved to the country in 2011 and played for Leicester City, under the management of Sven-Goran Eriksson, who had also coached him at the international level with the Ivory Coast national team.
From his rise through football he played in several countries, with spells at Trabzonspor in Turkey and Palermo in Italy.
However, it was his time at Leeds United in 2015 and Cardiff City from 2016, where he won fans.
Bamba played 118 times for Cardiff City in that time and formed a close relationship with manager Neil Warnock.
A Battle with Illness
Bamba was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 while he was at Cardiff.
He fought through chemotherapy as he remained determined and resilient in this life-threatening illness.
Incredibly, Bamba came back to playing for the final game of Cardiff’s 2020/21 campaign and that provided inspiration for fans as well.
He then went on to Middlesbrough in 2021 and has again caught the eye, with his winning penalty and knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup.
Bamba retired from playing at the end of that season and moved into coaching initially as Cardiff’s assistant manager, before taking up a head coach role with Adanaspor in Turkey.
Tributes Pour In
Adanaspor president revealed Bamba fell ill prior to a match and was transported to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital, where he sadly passed away.
The club expressed their condolences, with tributes soon pouring from the football world.
Leeds United shared their sorrow on social media, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this tragic time. Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts.”
