Leeds United featured in her argument for a reason as West Ham’s vice-chair, Karren Brady, has become the latest figure to say that she feels there needs to be financial relief between the Premier League and EFL.
Brady cited Leeds’ £40m Georginio Rutter sale to Championship’s financial strength, suggesting that the EFL is not as financially disadvantaged as some claim.
Premier League’s Money Flow Disputed
Brady opposed higher Premier League payments to EFL as financial deals discussed Championship sides like Leeds and Burnley have done alright on player sales, she pointed out in defence of suggestions that more money needs to flow from the top division.
While Leeds cashed in on high-profile sales, adding that Premier League clubs tend to prefer cheaper foreign options.
This shows that the Championship is not as crucial for supplying talent as the EFL suggests.
Future of Football Finance
Brady warned against government interference in football finance, under the threat of an independent football regulator being introduced.
Brady’s scepticism is shared by Leeds United managing director, Angus Kinnear.
The proposed changes could mean both clubs are forced to comply with new financial rules in the coming years, which echoed plans that would limit spending on wages, transfers, and agent fees.
A Leeds side with ambitions of returning to the Premier League and competing at its highest level, but like West Ham, they may face new financial challenges with future regulations.
