Leeds United are busy in the transfer market, with a new central midfielder close to joining the team.
After bringing in a seventh signing of the summer, Ao Tanaka, secured from Fortuna Dusseldorf, it looks as though the next order of business for the club is to strengthen the full-back positions.
Manager Daniel Farke has been looking for more cover at full-back since the second pre-season friendly a few weeks ago.
But so far new players for this position have been slow in coming.
Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo are currently first-choice full-backs, but an injury to either of them would leave Leeds short, with Sam Byram the only backup option.
Leeds Targeting Full-Back Isaac Schmidt
Leeds United have been associated with a few names for the full-back role this week.
Max Aarons and Owen Wijndal were mentioned as possible targets, but both seem unlikely to join.
Aarons, who is currently with Bournemouth, is believed to leave but the club refuses consent to a deal with Leeds to allow him leave on loan.
Owen Wijndal has been rumored as a Leeds target, but this is not thought to be correct news From the Dutch reports.
A new person has suddenly joined Leeds’s shopping list, Isaac Schmidt, a full-back from St.Gallen in Switzerland.
According to Blick Sport, Schmidt has caught Leeds’ eye. He plays primarily on the left, yet can also operate on both flanks.
Leeds are said to be prepared to pay £1 million for St Gallen’s 24-year-old talent who is under contract until 2026.
This fee makes sense for Leeds, as any new signing would likely be a second-choice option behind the current starters.
Who is Isaac Schmidt?
Isaac Schmidt is a player who delivers flexibility, he can line up at right or left back, and can even go all the way up the wing.
His main strengths have made him a scorer of 6 goals and provide 10 assists in over 100 outings for St Gallen.
Earlier in his career, Schmidt picked up two caps at youth level for Switzerland’s U20 team.
He has also played for Lausanne-Sport, where another target of Leeds, Alvyn Sanches, currently plays.
So Schmidt is not a familiar name to Leeds supporters, but opinions are divided on whether he would be a useful addition or not.
Leeds’ Need for Full-Back Depth
With Junior Firpo as the first-choice left-back, Leeds need more depth in defence. Bringing in Schmidt could provide the necessary cover in case of injuries or suspensions.
The club’s willingness to explore different options shows their intent to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes.
If Leeds can secure the signing of Isaac Schmidt, it could be a smart move to add some depth and flexibility to their backline, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead in the Championship season.
