Leeds United’s confidence in Illan Meslier appears to be fading after a string of inconsistent performances this season.
Meslier’s position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper is under scrutiny following his part in conceding Preston North End’s opener during the recent 1-1 draw on 14th December.
Meslier’s Struggles Cause Concern
Since joining Leeds in 2019, Meslier has been a key figure for the Whites, amassing nearly 200 appearances.
However, his form this season has raised doubts among fans and within the management. David Norris, highlighted the waning trust in the Frenchman.
“Meslier had started to look okay in recent games, but those I’ve spoken to who follow Leeds more closely aren’t convinced anymore,” Norris said.
He added that Daniel Farke might now be assessing other goalkeeping options due to Meslier’s inconsistency and costly mistakes.
Backup Options in the Squad
Leeds currently have two other senior goalkeepers in their squad, Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns.
Darlow, a former Newcastle United player, brings significant Championship experience and could step into the first-choice role if required.
Cairns, meanwhile, provides additional depth but has yet to make a significant impact.
Leeds Eyeing the January Window
With the January transfer window approaching, Leeds United may look to bring in fresh competition to secure stability between the posts.
Meslier’s errors have been highlighted as a key reason for dropped points this season, and Farke’s focus on promotion to the Premier League could accelerate the search for a long-term replacement.
Promotion in Sight Despite Goalkeeper Woes
Despite Meslier’s challenges, Leeds remained second in the Championship, just three points behind leaders Sheffield United.
As the team enters a critical festive period, Meslier will need to find consistency quickly if he hopes to retain his spot as Leeds’ number one.
Leeds fans will be eager to see how the club addresses this issue in January, especially with Premier League promotion within reach.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Meslier and the club’s ambitions.
