Preston North End’s manager, Paul Heckingbottom, has voiced his frustrations ahead of the upcoming Championship match against Leeds United.
Despite ending their 10-game winless streak with a victory over Cardiff City, Heckingbottom isn’t pleased with the fixture scheduling, calling it “foolish.”
Preston’s Challenge Against Leeds
Leeds United are set to visit Deepdale for a Saturday lunchtime match, and the timing isn’t in Preston’s favour.
Leeds will enjoy 24 extra hours of recovery time, having played their last game on Tuesday against Middlesbrough.
In contrast, Preston faced Cardiff away on Wednesday, giving them less time to prepare.
The clash is vital for both teams. Preston, sitting in 14th place in the Championship table, have struggled this season, winning only four games.
Leeds, on the other hand, are chasing consistency in away fixtures and will look to build on their recent victories.
Heckingbottom Slams Fixture Scheduling
Speaking after the Cardiff win, Heckingbottom didn’t hold back about his thoughts on the fixture schedule. He said:
“It’s foolish, really, how much of an advantage it gives another team. We’ve been on the wrong end of that.”
He expressed concern about the impact on his squad’s fitness, adding:
“Recovery is starting now, players are getting prepped now – but we will be ready come 12:30 Saturday.”
Preston will also miss Sam Greenwood, who cannot play against his parent club, Leeds United. Greenwood has been one of Preston’s key players, creating the most big chances for the team this season.
Leeds Look to Break Deepdale Curse
Leeds United haven’t had the best of luck at Deepdale in recent years.
Last season, they suffered a controversial 2-1 loss on Boxing Day, and during their promotion season, they needed a late Eddie Nketiah goal to snatch a point.
However, Leeds should feel confident going into this match.
Their recent win against Middlesbrough showcased their strong form, and the extra recovery time could give them an edge over a fatigued Preston side.
Fixture Issues Continue in the Championship
Heckingbottom’s frustration echoes complaints from other managers in the league, including Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder, who recently criticised the EFL for poor scheduling.
Many feel that the authorities need to rethink how matches are planned to ensure fairness across the competition.
With Leeds looking to continue their push for promotion and Preston eager to climb the table, this match promises to be a thrilling battle despite the scheduling controversy.
