Back in the year 2020, Leeds United had the chance to sign the World Cup winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez which they later missed and signed Illan Meslier instead.
After promotion to the Premier League the next target for Leeds investors was Martínez but there was no pressure, making it easy for Aston Villa to buy him for £ 17 million.
Since joining Villa, Martínez has performed remarkably well, including winning the World Cup with Argentina as well as the FIFA Best Goalkeeper award in 2022.
On the other hand, Meslier has had some rough time with his form and has been leaking in more goals than expected since he joined Leeds.
Leeds’ Interest in Martínez
Leeds has expressed an interest in signing Emiliano Martinez and Sergio Romero from Manchester United back in 2020.
Nevertheless, they dropped the idea which Villa then executed in hiring Martinez, who has since become a star for both club and country.
He has showcased fabulous shot-stopping abilities and now commands a market price of £23.3 million.
Meslier’s Struggles at Leeds
After permanently signing for £5 million, that’s quite a signing fee for a 24-year old. He sure has been no match to Martínez,
Leed fans surely are optimistic about Meslier. However, the club has come to regret the absence of Martínez who is now an international superstar.
