Leeds United have missed out on signing left-back Daniel Svensson, as the young Swedish defender is now set to join German giants Borussia Dortmund.
The Whites had been linked with the talented full-back throughout January, but it looks like he has chosen a different path for his future.
On Sunday morning, Svensson was spotted arriving in Dortmund to complete his medical and finalize his move from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland.
Reports suggest that the Bundesliga side reached an agreement with the player and are now set to sign him, despite interest from other clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, RB Leipzig, and Liverpool.
Leeds had been keeping a close eye on Svensson, hoping to strengthen their squad with a promising young defender.
However, the lure of playing for a club known for developing young talents like Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and Jude Bellingham proved too strong for the 22-year-old.
How Much Will Dortmund Pay?
The exact transfer fee is yet to be confirmed, but reports suggest that Nordsjaelland were asking for around £7.5 million.
Benfica had also shown interest in signing him earlier in the window, but they, like Leeds, will now have to look elsewhere for a left-back.
Nordsjaelland were initially hoping to keep Svensson until the summer, but after the player expressed his strong desire to move to Dortmund, they decided not to stand in his way.
What Does This Mean for Leeds?
Leeds United must now consider other options in their search for a left-back. However, recent performances from Junior Firpo might make them rethink their transfer plans.
Firpo, who has been heavily linked with a return to Spain, produced a stunning display in Leeds’ 7-0 win over Cardiff City.
The former Barcelona man provided three assists in that game, reminding everyone of his quality.
Leeds winger Dan James was full of praise for his teammate, saying: “Special mention to Junior as well. He’s been out a while (with injury) and he’s got three assists today. Everyone chipped in today.”
With his contract set to expire in July, Leeds now have a decision to make, do they stick with Firpo, or do they continue searching for a replacement?
For now, Leeds fans will have to accept that Svensson is no longer an option. But with the transfer window still open, there may still be time for the club to make a move for another defender before the deadline.
