As the summer transfer window draws to a close, Leeds United are gearing up for their last pre-season friendly against Valencia.
This is their last game of warm-up before they head off into the 2024/25 Championship season, which sees them host League One champions Portsmouth at Elland Road.
Manager Daniel Farke and his team have been active this summer, finalizing various deals to prepare for the upcoming campaign.
Busy Transfer Activity at Leeds
It has been a summer of immense change at Leeds United. Several players have left the club, notably those who had reached the end of their contracts, with Luke Ayling joining Middlesbrough and Jamie Shackleton moving to Sheffield United.
The regrettable nature of Archie Gray being sold off is also a transfer that has some importance for the club.
However, despite these exits Leeds have been busy looking to strengthen and finalize their squad before the transfer
Liam Cooper’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Negotiations are reportedly ongoing with another key man in club captain and legend Liam Cooper.
Out of contract and currently between teams, Cooper’s departure from Elland Road has not yet been formally recognized by the club. Farke has said that Cooper won’t be back and Ethan Ampadu took the Captaincy from him.
Leeds are expected to officially announce Cooper’s exit once he signs with a new club.
Interest from Rivals and Abroad
With the new season on the horizon, Cooper has found himself in demand with a few clubs both at home and abroad.
Stoke City were believed to be in the market for a 32-year-old center-back, only for their boardroom situation on deadline day saw them go all out and finish in style by securing Ben Gibson instead.
Cooper is on the radar of another Championship side in Watford but it remains understood to be at an enquiry level.
That is in addition to long-term interest from Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah, who offered Cooper a £40,000 per week deal last summer which he turned down.
Leeds United’s Transfer Strategy and Expectations
Leeds United have adopted a cautious, considered approach to their transfer activity this summer.
The club has aimed to balance the departure of key players with the acquisition of new talent to strengthen their squad.
As the transfer window closes, attention turns to Leeds and what their squad will look like going into the new season, pressing questions on whether or not they are able to follow through with a final few deals that boost them this term.
Preparing for the Championship Season
As Leeds United prepare to kick off their Championship campaign, the focus will be on integrating new players and ensuring the team is cohesive and competitive.
The pre-season friendly against Valencia will be a crucial test for Farke’s side, providing an opportunity to assess the squad’s readiness and make any final adjustments before the season opener against Portsmouth.
Leeds United’s summer transfer window has been a period of significant activity and strategic decision-making.
With the clock ticking down, the club’s final moves in the transfer market will be crucial in shaping their fortunes for the 2024/25 Championship season.
