Leeds United are looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, and one of their top targets is Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Whites are keeping an eye on the 26-year-old, but they must secure promotion to the Premier League if they want to stand a real chance of signing him.
Leeds Need a New Keeper
Leeds’ current goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, has not been at his best in recent times. His performances have raised questions, and the club is now thinking about bringing in a stronger option.
Kelleher has shown that he can play at the highest level, but he is struggling to get regular game time at Liverpool because of first-choice keeper Alisson Becker.
At Liverpool, Kelleher has mostly been used in cup matches. He was even trusted in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United, proving he has the quality to step up when needed.
However, with Liverpool agreeing to sign Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer, Kelleher could drop even further down the pecking order. This makes a move away from Anfield very likely.
Promotion is Key for Leeds
While Leeds are interested in signing Kelleher, one big problem stands in their way.
The Irish goalkeeper wants to play at the highest level and is not keen on dropping down to the Championship.
That means Leeds must win promotion this season if they want to have any hope of signing him.
At 26 years old, Kelleher is at a stage in his career where he wants to be a first-choice keeper.
He has been patient at Liverpool, but now he wants to move to a club where he will get regular starts.
Liverpool are expected to demand around £25 million for him, which is not a small amount. Leeds will need to be in the Premier League to afford such a fee.
Competition for Kelleher
Leeds are not the only club looking at Kelleher.
Other Premier League teams, including Newcastle United and even Tottenham Hotspur, are also interested.
Bournemouth are another side confident they can sign him in the summer.
If Leeds can get promoted and promise Kelleher the number one spot, they might have a chance.
But if they fail to go up, they will likely miss out on him as bigger clubs will be ready to make their move.
For now, Leeds fans will be hoping their team can finish the season strong and secure a place back in the top flight.
Only then will they have a real shot at landing Kelleher, a keeper who could make a huge difference in their bid to stay in the Premier League next season.
