Leeds United clearly outperformed Oxford United in their recent encounter, which effectively marked the victory of the 2024-25 season.
However, Joel Piroe endured quite a rough day throughout the match. The Dutch striker, who has been Leeds’ superb goal scorer and a forward all at once throughout the season, was unable to score.
This left room for another Championship midfielder to eclipse his tally. And that player is Josh Brownhill, who currently has more goals than Piroe after netting the decisive goal for Burnley in their 2-1 victory over Watford.
Piroe’s Frustrating Day
This was an opportunity lost for Piroe who might have increased his tally even though Leeds won comfortably thanks to goals from Dan James, Jayden Bogle, Brenden Aaronson, and Manor Solomon.
The striker assisted Soloman’s goal but would have fancied getting on the score sheet especially after such a dominant display by his teammates.
Piroe has scored seven goals which several other Championship strikers such as Joshua Windass and Haji Wright have now equaled.
Josh Brownhill’s Impact on Leeds’ Midfielder
A crucial takeaway from the match is the impressive evolution of Josh Brownhill who now has active prospects of growth.
It was reported by Leeds United that they are following Brownhill’s development quite keenly, and now he has 8 goals in the Championship germinating interest from rather unwanted clubs.
Ever since Saturday, Brownhill is expected to stop the rot for the rest of Burnley’s matches as he managed to score a goal.
Leeds are keen on bringing him to Elland Road, with his contract expiring next June. Leeds United have yet another reason to wish for Brownhill and that is his goal-scoring ability.
In the summertime transfer window, head-coach Daniel Farke moved in Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka to enhance Leeds’ midfield but they have yet to make a significant goal-scoring impact.
Rothwell and Tanaka have only been able to provide three assists this season while Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, also playing in midfield, have reaped three goals in total for themselves.
Leeds Looking to Strengthen in January
With Brownhill’s contract coming to an end soon, Leeds could sign him for a relatively low price of £2m, according to Carlton Palmer.
This would be an excellent opportunity for Leeds to boost their midfield and add a player capable of scoring goals.
Brownhill would add the type of attacking threat that Leeds need, especially as they push for promotion to the Premier League.
