Leeds United have several players out on loan this season, each with mixed performances.
Among these loanees is Darko Gyabi, whose temporary spell at Plymouth Argyle comes with a January recall clause.
As the transfer window approaches, Leeds must make a key decision about his future.
Leeds’ Loan Army
This season, five Leeds players have left on loan, Jack Harrison, Rasmus Kristensen, Sam Greenwood, Darko Gyabi, and Sonny Perkins.
While Harrison and Kristensen seem unlikely to return permanently, Greenwood and Gyabi still have a chance to reignite their Elland Road careers.
Perkins, meanwhile, has a deal running until 2025, making his return less likely.
Fans are eager for Harrison and Kristensen to secure permanent moves away, given their lack of commitment to the club since relegation.
For Gyabi and Greenwood, however, this season feels like a last chance to impress and make their case for a future at Leeds.
Plymouth Reveal Gyabi Recall Clause
Plymouth Argyle’s director of football, Neil Dewsnip, has revealed that Leeds hold a recall clause for Gyabi in January.
Speaking to the Plymouth Herald, Dewsnip shared that Leeds must decide whether to activate the clause by January 7.
He explained: “Between the first and the seventh of January, Leeds can recall Gyabi. But once it gets past the seventh, they can’t. That, I would like to think, is us defending ourselves, but the reality is they are not ours.”
This means Leeds must carefully weigh their options, ensuring any decision aligns with Gyabi’s development and the club’s midfield needs.
Why Leeds Should Let Gyabi Stay
Leeds currently have strong midfield options, even with injuries. By January, Ethan Ampadu is expected to return to full fitness, further bolstering Leeds’ squad.
Other midfielders like Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell, Josuha Guilavogui, and even young prospect Charlie Crew are already ahead of Gyabi in the pecking order.
While Plymouth are struggling in the Championship, the experience Gyabi is gaining there could be invaluable for his growth.
Pulling him back early may stunt his development if he struggles to find playing time at Leeds.
Long-Term Potential for Gyabi
Darko Gyabi’s loan spell at Plymouth is a chance for him to develop in a challenging environment.
Despite Plymouth’s tough season, the opportunity to play regular football in the Championship could prepare Gyabi for a stronger return to Leeds next season.
For now, Leeds should focus on allowing Gyabi to continue building his confidence and skill set at Plymouth.
With the January 7 deadline fast approaching, Leeds must act wisely to ensure both the player and the club benefit in the long term.
