Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool star Nathaniel Phillips this summer, as per Wales Online.
The Whites are reportedly searching for a new right-sided defender as their key centre-back Joe Rodon, who was at Elland Road on a loan deal last season, has returned to his parent club Tottenham Hotspur.
Daniel Farke is said to be keen on bringing the Spurs star back to the club but the Peacocks have been struggling to find an agreement with the Lilywhites over this deal.
So, it appears Leeds have now started exploring alternative targets in-case they couldn’t lure Rodon ahead of next season with Phillips now emerging as a serious option.
The Liverpool star was on loan at Cardiff City in the second half of last season and Wales Online states that Erol Bulut’s side are willing to bring him back. But, Liverpool want a fee of around £8m for their man and Cardiff can’t afford to sign him by matching the figure.
Leeds eye swoop to sign Phillips
So, the report claims that Leeds have now registered their interest in signing Phillips and they could look to formalise their interest soon.
However, Wales Online reports that Ipswich Town are also plotting a swoop for him and the lure of playing in the Premier League could persuade the defender to join Kieran McKenna’s side. So, Leeds will have to put their best efforts to sign Phillips this summer.
The 27-year-old, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is quick, strong, good in the air and excellent in defensive contributions. However, he isn’t the best with the ball at his feet but Farke likes to have centre-backs – who are comfortable with possession.
So, although he might not be the best option to play in the German’s system, he is an experienced defender and could be a solid acquisition for Leeds if they acquire his service.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Yorkshire club eventually manage to secure his signature in this transfer window to reinforce their defence.
