In the 2-2 draw against France on Friday afternoon, Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto was instrumental for Italy’s U21.
This was a preliminary match in the qualifiers of the Under-21 European Championship, Gnonto demonstrated his abilities before being replaced in the 73rd minute.
Gnonto Creates Italy’s Opening Goal
In what turned out to be Italy’s first goal, Gnonto was involved, beginning with a great trick on the left. Chelsea ‘stable’ Cesare Casadei managed to score from the box.
A minute before half time, the Italians extended the advantage with another goal scored by Giuseppe Ambrosino.
Missed Opportunities and a French Comeback
In the second half, Italy looked set to go further ahead when Gnonto shot into the side-netting just 4 minutes into the restart.
It was Gnonto’s shot that sailed past the target to dip dangerously for the Italy cap. However, the failure to score proved problematic when France completed the comeback.
Rayan Cherki and Valentin Atangana scored and the game was again tied, which showed that Italy couldn’t finish off the fixture.
It seems that from the tactical view it was reasonable to substitute Gnonto, he did so only for the injury and Fabio Miretti took his place in the 73rd minute.
What’s Next for Gnonto and Italy?
Italy’s Under-21 squad will now face Ukraine in La Spezia on Tuesday.
Gnonto is expected to feature again before returning to Leeds United for their Championship clash with Swansea City.
Both Italy and France have already secured their spots in next summer’s Under-21 European Championships.
With Gnonto’s impressive performances, he is likely to play a key role in the tournament unless called up to Italy’s senior squad for Nations League fixtures.
Gnonto’s display continues to excite Leeds fans, as the young winger proves to be an essential player for both club and country.
