Leeds United are chasing promotion back to the Premier League and currently sit second in the Championship table.
After a dramatic 1-1 draw against Preston North End, sealed by a late own goal, Daniel Farke’s side is determined to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.
The January transfer window is approaching, and Leeds are reportedly preparing a bid for a promising young midfielder, Dario Essugo, who could bring fresh energy and defensive strength to their campaign.
Leeds United Eye 19-Year-Old Star
Reports suggest Leeds are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon’s teenage defensive midfielder, Dario Essugo.
The 19-year-old is currently on loan at Las Palmas in LaLiga, where he has impressed with his performances.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Leeds tried to sign Essugo in the summer transfer window but failed.
Now, they hope to secure the deal in January. Sporting is reportedly willing to cut short his loan with Las Palmas, but only if Leeds agree to a permanent move in the summer for £6m.
Why Essugo Could Be a Key Signing
Essugo’s stats from LaLiga highlight his defensive abilities, making him an ideal addition to Leeds’ midfield.
He averages 4.1 tackles and interceptions per game, which would rank him as the best among Leeds’ current midfielders.
With Ethan Ampadu fit again, Essugo could form a strong defensive partnership in midfield.
This would allow Japan international Ao Tanaka to play in a more advanced role. Tanaka, who impressed with seven goals and three assists last season.
Bundesliga, has only managed one assist in the Championship this season.
Essugo’s presence could give Tanaka the freedom to rediscover his attacking form, potentially boosting Leeds’ goal-scoring threat.
Talent scout Jacek Kulig described Essugo as a “one-man army,” capable of breaking up opposition attacks consistently.
Leeds’ Promotion Focus
After narrowly missing out on promotion last season with a play-off final defeat to Southampton, Farke is determined to avoid the play-offs this year.
Leeds currently trail league leaders Sheffield United by three points and will want to stay in the automatic promotion places.
Signing Essugo could be a crucial move to strengthen Leeds’ chances of securing their Premier League return.
With his defensive skills and Tanaka’s attacking potential, the midfield could become a key weapon for Leeds in the second half of the season.
As January approaches, Leeds fans will be eager to see if the club can land Essugo and make the squad even stronger for the promotion battle ahead.
