Leeds United have reportedly opened talks with Everton over a deal to sell Wilfried Gnonto this summer, as per the transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
The 20-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Goodison Park last summer following the Whites’ relegation. However, Daniel Farke’s side eventually managed to keep hold of him and the Italian went on to play 36 games in the Championship last term, scoring eight goals and registering two assists.
The youngster helped his side reach the Championship playoff final before losing to Southampton. So, Leeds couldn’t manage to secure their top-flight status and as a result, they have reportedly suffered a big financial blow.
Therefore, the Peacocks need to sell their stars to balance the books this summer. They have already sold Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur, while Glen Kamara is on the verge of joining Stade Rennais.
Now, they could also sell Gnonto as writing on X, Romano has reported that Everton have opened talks with Farke’s side to learn about the details of signing the forward and have also held talks with the player’s representatives.
Leeds could sell Gnonto
The journalist says Gnonto is keen on joining Everton and playing in the Premier League, therefore, the Whites could be forced to cash-in on their star man this summer.
Romano wrote:
“Everton have genuine interest in Willy Gnonto as talks took place with player’s camp recently. Negotiations underway to understand deal conditions. Gnonto’s keen on the move.”
The Italian still has three years left in his current contract, hence Leeds are in a strong position to demand a big fee to let the forward leave and reportedly want around £30m.
Therefore, if the Peacocks eventually decide to sell these many of their first-team players then that will significantly make their squad weaker. Hence, if they don’t strengthen their squad with proper quality players then that will put Farke in a very difficult situation to help the club mount a top-two charge next season.
So, it remains to be seen what the Yorkshire club eventually do over the coming weeks in this transfer window.
