Leeds United midfielder Sam Greenwood has hinted that he might not return to Elland Road. The 23-year-old is currently playing for Preston North End on loan, and he is doing well under former Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom.
Greenwood has had a good season so far with Preston. He has scored seven goals in all competitions, with five of them coming in the Championship. Leeds had the option to bring him back in January, but they decided to leave him at Deepdale.
The midfielder has been a key player for Preston this season, and Heckingbottom is happy with his performances.
Greenwood still has a contract with Leeds until 2026, but he has only played 35 games for the club since joining in 2021. With Leeds pushing for promotion to the Premier League, it is not clear if he will be part of their future plans.
Greenwood Talks About His Future
In a recent interview with the Lancashire Evening Post, Greenwood spoke about his future. He said he is focusing on the present, but he will think about a permanent move to Preston at the end of the season.

“Obviously, I always focus on the present and focus on each game as it comes. Each season goes so quickly. I’m going to see what happens at the end of the season and I’ll obviously take Preston into big consideration.”
He added: “It’s a big decision. I’m in the present at the minute and I’ll come to that at the end of the season. It’s just one of them. I don’t really think about that at the minute. I just want to focus on my football, play, score as many as I can, just make things happen for this team.”
What This Means for Leeds United
If Leeds United win promotion to the Premier League, it is likely that Greenwood will leave. He has not been a regular starter for the team, and Daniel Farke may decide to sell him.
Reports from December suggested that Leeds were ready to let him go in January, but no deal was made.
If Leeds stay in the Championship, things might be different. Farke could decide to keep Greenwood as part of the squad, but Preston will likely push for a permanent deal.
Greenwood’s strong performances in the Championship show that he is a talented player at this level.
Paul Heckingbottom Praises Greenwood
Preston manager Heckingbottom is a big fan of Greenwood. He has spoken about how much the player enjoys his football at Preston and how well he fits into the team’s style.
He said: “Sam is loving it here. He gets what we want from him and what the expectations are, but likewise that suits him. He loves football and loves playing. He wants to improve and feels like he’s getting that here. Not only the opportunity on the pitch, but we work with him on the analysis side of things on the training ground.”
Preston have some key players out of contract in the summer, so they may need to sort those situations before making a final decision on Greenwood.
However, if both Preston and Greenwood want to make the deal permanent, Leeds United may not stand in their way.
