Leeds United was about to win the match against Sunderland with a 2-1 scoreline when Illan Meslier made a rare mistake and allowed a last-second equalizer.
In the match, the score was tight with Leeds managing to lead for the majority only managing to have Junior Firpo commit an own goal that gave Sunderland hope of scoring.
Pundit Jon Newsome, however, remained partial in blaming Meslier alone for the poor performance.
He emphasized that Brenden Aaronson had the last chance to finish the game in favour of the team during stoppage time.
After getting a beautiful ball from Isaac Schmidt, Aaronson could not score or set up Gnonto which would have blocked the last-minute Sunderland equalizer.
Aaronson’s Struggles
Aaronson, who has been consistent this season, did not perform well in this particular game and also appeared tired.
Newsome voiced his concern over the finer detail of the attacking play of Aaronson, arguing that if Leeds wants promotion, then sharper performances will be a must.
The USA international now faces a busy week with a troublesome international schedule and Leeds’ upcoming game against Sheffield United looming.
One possible worry could be Aaronson’s fatigue as the leeds’ team seeks to make a comeback.
Leeds United Must Be More Clinical
If Leeds wish to pursue promotion, they have to take their chances.
Aaronson’s missed chance exemplifies how important it is to be able to close out games when you are in a dominant position.
It was quite honestly in the second half that they had done their best to contain Sunderland’s threats but they could not see out the match and therefore only had a point.
