With the club announcing the capture of Welsh international Ethan Ampadu, let’s take a look at his career to date and what qualities he will be bringing to Elland Road.
22 year old Ampadu was born in Exeter and came through the academy at Exeter City FC making his senior debut in August 2016 at the tender age of 15, and in doing so became Exeter City’s youngest ever player. 12 months on from his debut, Ampadu found himself wanted by Chelsea and signed for the West London outfit in July 2017 at 16 years of age. Chelsea fought off interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal to sign the youngster, as his performances for Exeter had drawn the attention of the big Premier league sides.
Ampadu was considered a mature footballer, displaying composure on the ball that defied his age. Despite only featuring in one senior game for Chelsea, he was handed a 5 year contract in 2018. From there Ampadu was sent on a seasons long loan to the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig. Things didn’t go swimmingly for him in Germany as he only featured a handful of times, although injury did play its part.
After returning to Chelsea he was loaned out again, this time to Premier league side Sheffield United. He played more of a part at Bramell Lane, appearing in 27 games for the blades and earned praise for his performances and versatility. The season ultimately ended in relegation for Sheffield United and Ampadu found himself back at Stamford Bridge. Again, Ampadu was rewarded with a new three year contract at Chelsea but was not deemed ready for the first team. Two more season long loans followed, firstly at Venezia in Serie A and then with Spezia also of Serie A. Unfortunately for Ampadu both seasons ended with relegation meaning he was part of three consecutive relegations with three separate clubs.
In terms of his international career, Ampadu was initially called up to the Wales squad at 16, making his debut on the 10th of November 2017 aged 17. He would go on to take his place in the Wales squad for both the 2020 European championships and the 2022 World Cup. He is expected to be a mainstay in the squad over the next decade.
In his young career to date, Ampadu has had mixed fortunes. For one reason or another he was never truly given the opportunity at Chelsea. He worked his way through four loan moves which in itself does not create the ideal conditions for a young footballer to thrive in. He had a strong season in the Premier league with Sheffield United in the 20/21 season and despite two relagations in Italy, he was well regarded. The experience of playing at the euros and world cup will also have benefitted his game. It is clear he is a player with talent and versatility and at 22 years old has the potential to develop further. His ability to start attacks and pick a pass from deep lying positions will no doubt interest Daniel Farke, who may also be tempted to play him as a defensive midfielder. Leeds could have a right payer on their hands with Ampadu and perhaps a place to call home in Elland Road over the next few years will be the making of him.
