Leeds United will end 2024 as the top team in the Championship after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Derby County at Pride Park.
The game’s only goal came from Brenden Aaronson in the 79th minute, finishing off a brilliant team move.
Leeds showed their quality with controlled possession and sharp passing, securing a vital win in their push for promotion.
The first half saw Leeds dominating the ball but struggling to create clear chances.
Mateo Joseph forced a save from Derby’s goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, but Leeds couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Derby worked hard defensively, keeping the game tight and frustrating the visitors.
However, Aaronson’s moment of brilliance in the second half proved the difference, as he calmly slotted the ball into the net after a slick passing move involving several Leeds players.

Aaronson Shines in Tight Contest
The second half was much more open, with both teams creating chances.
Aaronson had an early opportunity saved by Zetterstrom, while Illan Meslier made a vital stop at the other end to deny Derby’s Curtis Nelson.
Substitute Dan James also came close but couldn’t beat the impressive Derby goalkeeper.
Leeds finally broke through with a stunning team goal. Aaronson played a key role in the buildup, linking with teammates before bursting into the box to score.
Derby’s late attempts to equalise fell short, and Leeds held on for an important win that puts them two points clear at the top of the table.
This result mirrors Leeds’ position five years ago, when they were also top of the Championship at the end of December, a season that ended with promotion.
Leeds will next face Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road, while Derby travel to Sheffield Wednesday, looking to bounce back from this narrow defeat.
