Matt Grimes, once a Leeds United loanee, made his debut for Coventry City on Wednesday night. The midfielder came off the bench in the second half as Coventry faced Leeds in the Championship.
It was a special moment, as Grimes had a tough time at Leeds during his loan spell back in 2016-17. Back then, he was a young player from Swansea, brought in by Garry Monk. But things didn’t go well for him at Elland Road.
He played just 12 times for Leeds, and even his mother made headlines by calling Leeds fans “horrid” on social media.
Grimes Talks About Leeds and the Fans
Despite his struggles at Leeds, Grimes became a key player for Swansea, making over 300 appearances and even captaining the side.
This season, he made a surprising move to Coventry City for £3.5 million. After making his debut, Grimes spoke to Coventry’s YouTube channel about the match.
He praised Leeds, saying: “Leeds are a top team, that’s the level we want to get to. In my opinion, they’re the best team in the league. Loved it, the atmosphere before the game was incredible, both sets of fans were excellent.”
Leeds Continue Their Winning Run
Leeds United secured a 2-0 win over Coventry, thanks to goals from Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe. It was another strong performance for Daniel Farke’s side, who could have scored more but missed chances.
This victory keeps Leeds on an impressive 14-game unbeaten streak. They also recorded their sixth consecutive clean sheet.

Leeds now sit at the top of the Championship table with 66 points, five points ahead of Burnley and Sheffield United. Both of those teams have a game in hand, so the promotion race is still close.
Next up, Leeds will turn their attention to the FA Cup, where they face Millwall. After that, they have a crucial league clash against Watford.
With 15 league games left, Leeds are in a strong position to push for automatic promotion.
