One of the real legends at Leeds United has to be Mark Viduka, who is renowned for his goal-scoring ability.
Viduka impressed at club level, amassing a career total of 266 goals for club and country.
Out of those goals, 72 were scored during his time at Leeds, where he became an iconic figure of the club’s legendary players.
Viduka’s Legendary Leeds Goals
Viduka was a high profile scorer of goals for Leeds, scoring four in a memorable 4-3 victory over Liverpool and also netting against clubs like Besiktas, Anderlecht, and Real Madrid.
In Leeds he was unplayable, a powerful forward with the killer touch and an accomplished hold-up player.
But of his many goals, Viduka rated above all others, one in particular is the winner against Arsenal in 2003.
The 2003 Arsenal Goal: Viduka’s Favorite
But speaking in 2021, Viduka admitted that his favorite goal was the one which effectively secured Leeds’ survival in the Premier League.
With just minutes left to play at Highbury, a Viduka moment of inspiration with his left foot, securing a 3-2 win over Arsenal.
The win that sealed Leeds’ top-flight status was, therefore, one of the defining moments in his career.
Viduka described the goal as “massive” because we knew that we had to win to stay in the Premier League.
Not only did his strike all but confirm Leeds’ safety, it was the last time Arsenal lost before their famous Invincible run.
Comparing Viduka to Modern-Day Strikers
Even comparing Viduka’s abilities to top-end strikers of today like Erling Haaland.
Although Haaland has built a reputation as a goal-scoring machine, Thierry Henry recently suggested that Viduka was superior when it came to holding the ball up, underlining what an effective figure Viduka is still considered within the game.
Viduka’s legacy at Leeds remains one of both physicality, finishing and coolness in front of goal, making him one of the club’s all-time greats.
The one he scored against Arsenal is the best of them all, and arguable the most significant goal in Leeds United history.
