Mateo Joseph has been a constant topic of discussion among Leeds United fans and pundits alike due to his recent struggles in front of goal. Despite being billed as a breakout star for the Whites this season, and a replacement for the injury stricken Bamford, Joseph has found it challenging to make a significant impact on the score sheet. So is he turning out to be a flop, or just a fluke?
Goal drought
Joseph, still only a mere 21 years old and also the second cousin of Emile Heskey, has managed to score only three goals in 26 league appearances this season. This lack of goal-scoring prowess has cause for some apprehension, especially for a team that is aiming for promotion. Leeds United legend Lee Chapman did not hold back in his assessment, stating that Joseph needs to improve his goals-per-game ratio to prove he can lead the team to success. Chapman emphasized that at Joseph’s age, he should be hitting the target more consistently, averaging one goal every two to two and a half games.
Transfer Rumours
With Leeds rejected and alleged £10 million from Real Betis in the recent transfer window, the pressure on Joseph has been compounded by the fact that Leeds United’s other strikers have also faced challenges. The responsibility has largely fallen on Joseph and Joel Piroe. While Piroe has been more prolific, Joseph has struggled to find the back of the net missing some absolute sitters in recent games, didn’t even get a shot off against Millwall and hitting the crossbar against West Bromwich. Whilst there is no dispute he makes a huge impression when coming off the bench, for a substitute number 9, these missed chances are becoming all too familiar.

Despite these challenges, there are those who defend Joseph. Tony Dorigo, a former Leeds United player, has highlighted Joseph’s contributions beyond just goal-scoring. Dorigo pointed out that Joseph has three assists this season and has played well, even if the goals have not come as often as required or indeed needed. He praised Joseph’s power, composure, and his ability to create chances for his teammates.
Positives for the future?
Mateo Joseph’s lack of goal-scoring for Leeds United is certainly a feeling of discomfort, but it is clear that he possesses the potential to turn things around. Maybe the season is too big for him this year and expectations were too high, it’s possible he’s just not ready for the pressure that was always upon Leeds United as a whole squad this season. He has room to grow, and with the support of his teammates and guidance of Farke and his coaches, Joseph has the opportunity to prove his worth and become a key player for the Whites.
