When Paraag Marathe and the 49ers sold Red Bull a 10% stake in Leeds United, fans were excited to see the endless opportunities and investments possible alongside partners 49ers and the later addition of Will Ferrell! While Red Bull has a history of investing in sports teams and turning them into successful entities, the question remains: has their involvement given Leeds United the wins they need?
Summer investment
In the summer of 2024, Red Bull purchased a minority stake in Leeds United, acquiring around 10% of the club. This move was part of Red Bull’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the football world. Leeds were now added to its portfolio of clubs, which includes RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls. Unlike their other investments, Red Bull assured fans that Leeds would retain its unique identity and colours as part of the deal.
As part of the investment, Red Bull injected approximately £8 million primarily into Leeds United through a new front-of-shirt deal, setting a record for a Championship club. This financial boost was expected to help the club strengthen its squad and improve its facilities, potentially leading to better on-field performances.
Performance on the pitch
Despite the financial injection and the promise of a brighter future, the impact of Red Bull’s involvement on Leeds United’s performance has been mixed. At the beginning of this season, once again, Leeds fans saw an exodus of essential players such as Summerville, Gray, Sinisterra and Rutter. Supporters were exasperated at the lack of immediate investment in new players, and a nervousness of which players were still signed to “get out clause” contracts.
With an undisclosed investment ranging from a rumoured £40million all the way to £75 million, where exactly has the money gone?
Certainly a lot of that responsibility for scouting and replacement of players has fallen on Farke’s shoulders. He and his coaches have done a sterling job with the Del Boy dealings of loans, sales and building a bigger squad, allowing the advantage of rotating players when Sky Sports Leeds like to change the matchday dates on a whim.
No doubt the team’s performance has been hampered by injuries, Bamford, Ampadu, Wober to name but a few. And yet the statistics are compelling. A consistent form of 17 League matches unbeaten, a record not seen since the Don Revie days of 1974. The best goal difference the club has ever seen, and conceded just 22 goals after 35 league games the fewest in any single season in the club’s history. Are we now seeing the true impact of Red Bull’s subtle, behind the scenes, investment?
Long-Term Plans
Red Bull’s long-term plans for Leeds United remain unclear. While there has been speculation about a full takeover, Red Bull has not made any moves to increase its stake in the club….just yet. However, word on the street is that Red Bull are planning to make further investments in football next year, which could lead to them increasing the size of its stake in Leeds United.
And let’s not forget former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has recently started work as Red Bull’s Head of Soccer. The Austrian company is actively preparing to reinforce its investment in the sport, strengthening the rumours swirling around that the energy drinks giant is cutting some of their capital assigned to other sports with a view to increasing their emphasis on football.
The company has also focused on striking commercial deals with other Premier League clubs, such as Newcastle United, Everton, West Ham, and Crystal Palace. Perhaps this strategy suggests that Red Bull may be more interested in using Leeds as a marketing vehicle rather than a primary focus for their football ambitions? Were we just a guinea pig in their exploration of financial ventures in the world English football? A little pond to dip their toes in, but really they had their sights on the big boys.
While Red Bull’s involvement with Leeds United has brought some financial advantages and some improvements, it has not yet resulted in the visible investment that fans were hoping for. The long-term impact of Red Bull’s investment remains to be seen. So does Red Bull give you wins? Time will tell if Leeds United can achieve the success that other Red Bull-owned clubs have enjoyed.
