Leeds United was just a few minutes away from snatching a crucial away victory in an intense Championship clash against Sunderland.
But to their utmost dissatisfaction, a late error on the part of the keeper Illan Meslier saw Sunderland score an equaliser during the dying embers of the game, thus levelling things up at 2-2 and maintaining the Black Cat’s home’s unbeaten streak this season.
Leeds Take the Lead After Early Setback
Sunderland began actively and Chris Rigg gave them the lead when converted from close range after a cross from Dennis Cirkin.
However, it was not short of the lead. At first, they had control, but Leeds stepped in as Joel Piroe scored an amazing header to equalize before halftime.
As the game progressed, Leeds kept their hold in the second half, which was capped by Junior Firpo’s goal from some great buildup play.
It looked as though Leeds had taken control of the match managing Sunderland’s endeavors without the slightest trouble and looking forward to the end of the match.
A Frustrating Finish for Leeds United
The Defence didn’t lose its poise but neither did Sunderland and fought on.
Right at the end of the game, Meslier made a mistake and dropped a simple ball and Sunderland managed to equalize at the very end.
The mistake left Leeds frustrated, as they had been in a strong position to secure all three points.
Meslier’s Blunder Costs Leeds
Leeds was good in front of the goal with Piroe and Firpo’s goals scored, however Meslier’s howler later in the game dampened the performance.
The equalizer that Leeds conceded in the 97th minute would have been a hard blow for Leeds considering they had controlled the match well for large periods.
Leeds would be disappointed with the fact that they allowed a win to swipe over them but in this match, it reflected both their attacking power and fields for perfection.
Sunderland will be thankful to have managed to steal one point in what was obviously a difficult match.
