Joe Rothwell joined Leeds United on a season-long loan from Bournemouth with dreams of the big time.
Brought in just weeks into the summer transfer window, before Leeds had even kicked a ball in pre-season.
And despite working his way back to full fitness during a pre-season, Rothwell has struggled to find his place in the team.
Rothwell has only played 51 minutes in the Championship so far this season.
He played only six minutes in the following two games against Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.
More of a worry is that Tanaka gets more game time before being even fitter.
Tanaka, who plays a similar midfield role, is likely the first-choice number eight, which could push Rothwell further down the pecking order.
Midfield Competition Grows
For Rothwell it would be difficult to nail down a spot in the midfield space he has at Leeds United.
Players like Ilia Gruev, who is more of a holding midfielder, have been introduced in preference to Rothwell during recent matches.
Rothwell came to camp expected to challenge for a starting role given his attacking style, but the competition is steep.
Despite his experience and potential, it would appear that Rothwell will have to bide his time.
Rothwell still has plenty more to give on the pitch at 29, but he won’t want to be sitting around warming a bench.
For him, it’s all about staying in-game shape because over 46 games there are going to be opportunities.
Patience is Rothwell’s Only Option
Until then, Rothwell simply has to keep his head down and grind away until he gets another shot.
While that 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough was sore on Leeds, Rothwell was one of the few players who showed some positive signs.
He is aware that he will get his chance, and when it does, he needs to be ready to prove himself.
Rothwell joined United to play some more regular football, but with the level of competition in the squad, he has to bide his time.
Leeds fans will be hoping that he makes an instantaneous impact once given the chance to shine.
Until then, patience is key, and Rothwell must keep pushing himself in training to make sure he’s ready when called upon.
In a season as long and demanding as the Championship, depth in the squad is crucial, and Rothwell’s role, whether starting or coming off the bench, could still be vital for Leeds United’s success.
The midfielder just needs to stay positive and seize every opportunity that comes his way.
