Leeds United interested in Austrian midfielder Dejan Ljubicic from FC Koln before the transfer window closes on 30 August.
The 26-year-old says he is keen to switch to Elland Road, with Leeds already making a £3.4 million bid.
However, Koln have turned down the bid on the ground that they can not sign a replacement for obvious reasons, they are currently under a FIFA ban until January 2024.
Ljubicic: The Perfect Fit for Leeds?
Given Leeds United’s current squad hang depth problem, especially in the midfield, the acquisition of Ljubicic might prove crucial.
Manager Daniel Farke has lost more than a few of these vital players, including Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray, and this has left the team with a shortage of options as they start their new season in the Championship.
As a player, Ljubicic has made 94 appearances for Koln since joining the club in 2021 and picked up nine caps with Austria at international level.
His all-action style and strong showings have raised eyebrows, making him an extremely attractive option for the club.
A Deal in the Making?
It is reported that Leeds may have to double their £3.4 million bid, with the price now being put at $6.8 million to finalize an agreement for Ljubicic.
Meanwhile, although Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev have settled into a good partnership in center-of-the-field positions, the list of alternatives is weak enough that Ljubicic could get a fair amount of playing time as things work out.
As the transfer deadline approaches, Leeds fans will be watching closely to see if their club can bring in the reinforcements needed to compete effectively this season.
With Farke pushing for this deal, the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Ljubicic will be wearing a Leeds shirt come September.
Leeds United’s potential signing of Ljubicic could be a game-changer, providing much-needed depth and experience in a squad aiming to bounce back strongly in the Championship.
