Can Glen Kamara be the next target for Leeds United this summer, who are in dire need of strengthening their midfield with the recent exits of Weston McKennie, Robin Koch, Brendan Aaronson and Marc Roca. With 17 days to go before the start of the Championship, the clock is ticking on summer signings.
Rangers manager Mick Beale confirmed there has been significant interest for the 27 year old Finnish International Glen Adjei Kamara by Leeds United in recent days, with rumours heading towards a £4 million price tag.
Kamara who has clocked an impressive 118 appearance for Rangers, started out his career in Southend United youth team before moving to Arsenal’s youth Academy in 2012. He has had brief spells at Colchester, before returning back to Southend and the moving to Dundee. He has made 52 appearances for Finland earning him Finnish Footballer of the Year in 2022.
Signing for Rangers in January 2019 for a bargain price of £50,000, making him one of the best value for money signings, he scored his first goal in senior football with the opener for Rangers against his former team Dundee.
Although Kamara’s style of play mainly concentrates solely in central midfield whilst at Rangers, he does tend to drift from the centre of the pitch and favours short yet effective passing, as opposed to long Hail Mary style balls, and his most threatening passes are almost always moving to the right.
Statistically speaking, with just 9 goals to his name over a period of 8 years for both club and country, on paper he doesn’t sound too exciting for Leeds United fans, but be assured this player is a work horse in midfield and a safe pair of hands. His unselfishness and preference in passing the ball to those who can score is very much in his character. He is far more skilled at playing into a teammate or into space towards the goalkeeper, demonstrating a self awareness of his strengths on the ball. Kamara’s fundamental duties when the passing is to get the ball up the field and safely to teammates, progression is the name the game for him. Don’t get me wrong he can score when needed, but when you’re playing for a team like Rangers there is more than enough goals to go around and so he is rarely asked to step into these shoes!
Leeds United should snap up this player in a heartbeat, he could be an excellent replacement for the recent departures of yesteryear players who have already packed their kit bags and are heading out the door. Kamara could tick a number of these boxes and he will work hard for Leeds. He knows his strengths, favours ball security and retention as opposed to confronting the opposition, and quite frankly after last season Leeds United could really use a player than can keep and retain the ball under pressure, and maintain a calming influence in midfield.
