Newcastle United are after a new player to improve their squad from the wing positions. Manager Eddie Howe hopes to land a top flight attacker to play alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon with his £100m transfer kitty.
The aim is to have someone better than Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.
Bowen Bid Falls Through
West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen was the original candidate for that slot. Yet the Magpies are facing frustration as it emerged that West Ham do not want to sell, and Bowen is in turn keen on a move to St James’ Park.
That has prompted Newcastle’s change in focus to include other options, particularly from the Championship.
Championship Prospects
Newcastle are keen to sign winger Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United. The winger has shown glimpses of talent in the Championship and is heavily tipped for a Premier League move.
The Premier League potential of Summerville will attract him to the Magpies. A Leeds player Newcastle are tracking is Wilfried Gnonto.
The 20-year-old Italian forward came to Leeds in 2022 with much fanfare, showing glimpses of his immense talent. This past season he played in 44 games and found the back of the net 9 times while also leading with three assists.
While he has the capability, there are certain insiders that feel still isn’t quite what Newcastle need right now.
Expert Opinions
This is what HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey had to say on Gnonto, “He is a player that Newcastle do like the look of but I am led to believe he isn’t anyway near top of their list.”
Everton likes him a lot. He is probably more likely to leave than Newcastle. Bailey also suggested that Gnonto could be seen as someone for the future at Newcastle, rather than an instant contributor.
Setting the Bar Higher
Newcastle told to dream bigger by transfer chief, Paul Mitchell Gnonto has flashed brilliance, but Newcastle needs someone who can offer near-elite production from the jump. This means the club can afford to buy a bigger name with more experience.
Newcastle have high aspirations and pursuit of a winger, who has the quality to play at top level shows it.
With plenty of time still left in the transfer window, it will be interesting to see who ends up pulling on that black and white shirt at St James’ Park – regardless, Benitez desperately needs another body if Newcastle are to move forward this season.
