Southampton ready to make £20m bid.
Should Leeds United achieve the aim of promotion this season, the summer transfer window promises to be the most exciting in almost two decades for the club. United will benefit from the huge financial rewards that come with Premier League football and will look to strengthen. Improved wealth coupled with the pulling power of Marcelo Bielsa will make Elland Road an attractive destination for many.
The flip side to this is true if Leeds remain in the Championship. Advances from Premier League and the continent will arrive in abundance for United’s star players as well as the Head Coach. Bielsa has his side playing an exciting attacking brand of football in the system he believes in. Quite how he has managed to take Leeds United to the brink of promotion with almost the same squad as last season remains a mystery.
There have been several players who have excelled this season, too many to mention in truth. Whilst Andrea Radrizzani will not welcome bids for any of his key players, for the right money he may find it difficult to turn down. We saw first hand earlier this season with Ronaldo Vieira heading to Sampdoria for £7m. Vieira was beginning to flourish having emerged through the youth teams in recent years and had established himself in the squad. Similarly can be said of Kalvin Phillips whom Southampton appear to have on their summer wish list. Phillips impressive form has been recognised by the EFL by way of inclusion into the leagues team of the year. Converted by Bielsa into a holding midfielder/ deep lying playmaker Phillips has been a revelation. When Phillips performs, Leeds seem to tick. Equally impressive is his versatility, having filled in at Centre Back on thirteen occasions this campaign.

With England Manager Gareth Southgate, focused on bringing through the best young talent, will undoubtedly be aware of Kalvin Phillips. If as expected he harbours hopes of representing his country, Phillips will understand the need to showcase his talent on the biggest stage. He will have a burning desire to test himself against the best. Former Leeds youngster Lewis Cook has paved the way following his move to Bournemouth and if not for a season ending injury would have been in contention for the recent European qualifiers. Leeds fans have suffered in recent years. Having seen home grown stars such as Cook, Sam Byram Charlie Taylor, Fabian Delph and Johnny Howson all make the step up to the Premier League. They will sincerely hope that Phillips follows suit, in a Leeds United shirt.
The recent speculation surrounding Phillips will be particularly unwelcome considering Leeds have four huge games left this season. Victory at home to Wigan on Friday will take them one step closer to promotion, one step closer to retaining the services of Phillips and others including Jack Clarke. Ckarke is another player tipped to reach the very top with a host of Premier League clubs waiting in the wings. Promotion has always been of paramount importance to the club. It takes on extra significance when a group of talented young players future with the club is at stake.
